| Duke Ellington's 117th birthday was celebrated with a special film presentation and a concert by the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA) Jazz Ensemble on Friday, April 29, 2016 at San Diego City College's Saville Theater. The event was a special celebration as it was a final performance by the SDSCPA Jazz Ensemble as they prepare to represent San Diego as 1 of only 15 ensembles in North America to compete in the Essentially Ellington competition in New York City, May 5-7, 2016.

 Jazz Live in May will be bringing a Grammy-nominated drummer, composer and producer to the Saville Theatre TONIGHT at 8pm. Gerry Gibbs is one of the hottest jazz artists around these days and Jazz 88.3 is thrilled to have him and his Thrasher Quartet (featuring Rob Hardt on flute/clarinet) to the Saville Theatre. This will be a special night because Gerry will be leading his band through Jazz interpretations of R&B classics. If you are a valid Jazz 88 member you can reserve your tickets in the Speakeasy.
