    • The 26th Annual San Diego Music Awards will take place at House of Blues on Tuesday, March 21st! Doors open at 6PM, with a pre-show TV taping of Tonight in San Diego!   • Upcoming Artist of the Week - Harold Mabern [Wikipedia]

    • Born: March 20, 1936 (age 80) Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.

    • pianist and composer, principally in the hard bop, post-bop, and soul jazz fields.[1] He is described in The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings as "one of the great post-bop pianists"

    • Mabern learned by watching and emulating pianists Charles Thomas and Phineas Newborn, Jr.[3]:34 Mabern attended Douglass High School,[4] before transferring to Manassas High School;[5] he played with Frank Strozier, George Coleman and Booker Little at this time, but was most influenced by pianist Newborn, Jr.[6]

    • He also developed by listening to Ahmad Jamal and others in clubs,[7] and "playing and practicing 12 hours a day" for the next five years,[3]:34 but he remained self-taught as a pianist.[4] Mabern went on to play with Walter Perkins' MJT + 3 and others in Chicago.

    • Mabern moved to New York City in 1959. According to his own account, he moved there with saxophonist Frank Strozier on November 21, 1959, checked in at a hotel and then went to Birdland, where he met Cannonball Adderley, who asked him if he wanted a gig. Mabern accepted, and was shown inside, where trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, who was looking for a pianist to replace the soon-to-depart Tommy Flanagan, auditioned him and offered him the place.[6] A few weeks later, most of the members of this band then joined Jimmy Forrest for a recording in Chicago that resulted in the albums All the Gin Is Gone and Black Forrest, which were also the debut recordings for guitarist Grant Green.[9][10]

  • Jazz Live- Peter Sprague presents "Planet Cole Porter" - Tuesday, April 11, 2017 8-10pm PT - Peter Sprague takes hold of the classic songs of Cole Porter for our next Jazz Live on Tuesday, April 11th. Peter will be presenting these treasures in a new color of Samba, Funk, Salsa, and Jazz. “Just One of Those Things” swinging fast and morphing over to funk, “Love For Sale” taking a trip to Cuba, “Night and Day” arcing with the moon in Brazil...you get the picture. The band includes some of the best with Rebecca Jade on vocals, Tripp Sprague on sax and flute, Gunnar Biggs on bass, Duncan Moore on drums, and Peter Sprague on guitar.   • The Inaugural San Diego Blues Caravan- Tuesday, April 18! The first-ever KSDS San Diego Blues Club Caravan will take place Tuesday, April 18, beginning at 7PM! About a dozen clubs will be participating. We'll have buses going from club to club, stopping about every 10-15 minutes. With your Caravan pass, you can start at any participating venue, stay as long or as little as you like, then board the bus to the next club. There are no minimums at any of the venues; buy food and drink, or not, as you choose. Any time you like, take the bus back to where you started.
