On our first Round Up of 2017, we look back at how we rang out 2016 with New Years Eve Across America and our renewed partnership with the La Jolla Athenaeum for their 2017 Jazz Series at The Library and Art Center, along with what was hot on Jazz 88 social media. We take a look at the upcoming week of Live Jazz and Blues in San Diego which includes the highly-anticipated Mark Dresser Quintet at Jazz Live San Diego Tuesday, January 10, what’s planned for broadcast this week on your station, and a look at head at 2017...it’s all coming up on The Jazz 88 Round Up!
The First Week of 2017 at Jazz 88.3
2017 started in the afterglow of our the station’s New Year’s Eve 2016 festivities. Music Director Joe Kocherhans selected his Top 10 Discs of 2016 which played in their entirety for most of New Years Day. The releases included new music by…and the list is linked to at Jazz88.org.
On New Years Eve, Jazz 88.3 presented our first “New Years Eve Across America” with the producer of our Friday noon PT weekly concert series “Inside Jazz” ,Tim Pinch. With Live Concert performances introduced by “The Drive” host Ron Dhanifu, between set interviews by SoCal Jazz Authority and Jazz 88.3 Membership Director Ken Borgers, and a live video feed on our website home page, it was a great way to ring out a stellar year for the station and us all.
We also announced our renewed partnership with the La Jolla Athenaeum Music and Arts Library for their Athenaeum Jazz 2017 Season At The Library in La Jolla and Art Center at Bread & Salt in Barrio Logan. Artists include…

“...an American virtuoso jazz guitarist of Sicilian descent. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century.[1][2] His sophisticated style of chord-melody, with an outstanding knowledge of chord inversions and progressions, extensive use of walking basslines, and melodic counterpoint during improvisation, opened up new possibilities for the jazz guitar and had a profound influence on later guitarists.
In addition to his extensive solo work, Pass is remembered for his long-term partnerships with singer Ella Fitzgerald and pianist Oscar Peterson.”

Donald Harrison Quartet - Saturday, February 4, 2017
The winter series opens on Saturday, February 4 with an Athenaeum debut by the Donald Harrison Quartet, featuring Harrison on alto sax, Zaccai Curtis on piano, Max Moran on bass and Darryl Staves on drums. Harrison has had a stellar career as a leader and collaborator with artists including Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Lena Horne, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Eddie Palmieri, Dr. John, McCoy Tyner, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Miles Davis, Notorious BIG, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A native of the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, he is Big Chief of the Congo Nation Afro-New Orleans Cultural Group, which keeps alive the seminal traditions of Congo Square.
