The Week In Review - Monday, January 9 through Sunday, January 15, 2017

This past week, Jazz 88.3’s own Jazz Live San Diego series kicked off 2017 with a performance of the Mark Dresser Quintet, who included Nicole Mitchell, Michael Dessen, Kjell Nordeson, and Joshua White. Playing music the Dresser’s newly acclaimed release “Sedimental You”, the audience in the Saville Theater was very attentive and appreciative of music that, in the words of Jazz reviewer Robert Bush, could help you “grow your ears”. The concert was followed by an interview with Mark which touched on his early musical upbringing, the performer-based writing and recording of “Sedimental You”, and his upcoming plans. The show concluded with a live in-studio preview of the next Jazz Live installment, with band leader and Jazz historian Paul Combs who will be leading a quintet of musicians including the great Bill Cunliffe in a celebration of the music of Jazz great Tadd Dameron on the 100th anniversary of his birth, Tuesday, February 21. Jazz 88 members can reserve their 2 free tickets right now in the Jazz 88 Speakeasy at Jazz88.org and if you aren’t a member, this is a great time to become one and begin your years-worth of free tickets to Jazz Live San Diego.

This past Saturday evening saw the 2017 opening of the Jazz at the Jacobs series by the San Diego Symphony and currated by San Diego trumpter Gilbert Castellanos, with “Birth of the Cool: A West Coast Jazz Salute”. We will give you information about upcoming shows in the series near the end of the Round Up and you can find out more at Jazz88.org.
