Join Sam Wisman and Special Guest Chuck Haddix for Previously Unheard Bird

Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. PT on Jazz Across America: Kansas City

Previously unheard Bird’s the word this Wednesday evening on Jazz Across America: Kansas City with Sam Wisman.

Tune in Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. PT for a special edition of “Jazz Across America: Kansas City.” Host Sam Wisman will be dedicating his weekly Kansas City-based program to one of the most historically significant archival jazz finds and reclamation projects in recent memory.

Consisting of previously unreleased recordings of Charlie Parker made in his hometown of Kansas City, Mo. between 1941 and 1951, Charlie Parker: Bird in Kansas City was released recently by Verve Records to acclaim, astonishment, and surprise. Most of the tunes here not only hadn’t been had previously heard; several of them hadn’t even been heard of

But, as a memorable Teri Hatcher-played character once famously said on Seinfeld: “They’re real…and they’re spectacular.”

Broadcaster, author, and jazz historian Chuck Haddix served as a co-producer on, and wrote liner notes for, Verve’s recently released “Charlie Parker: Bird in Kansas City.” He’ll join Sam Wisman on this week’s “Jazz Across America: Kansas City” to talk about this monumental archival release.

Joining Sam on the air will be Chuck Haddix, one of the world’s foremost living experts on Parker’s life, music, and discography. A longtime on-air personality/producer at Kansas City’s KCUR-FM and author of Bird: The Life and Music of Charlie Parker (Univ. of Illinois Press) and Kansas City Jazz: From Ragtime to Bebop – A History (Oxford Univ. Press), Haddix served as a co-producer on Bird in Kansas City and also authored its liner notes.

So tune in Wednesday, Dec. 4, the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving, as Sam Wisman serves up an altogether different species of bird – a yardbird – on "Jazz Across America: Kansas City." It's all right here on KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM in San Diego, and all around the world at jazz88.org.
