One of the best things I find out in the interviews I have the honor of doing on The New Jazz Thing or as part of Jazz Live San Diego, or just in talking with Jazz and music lovers I come across is the influence of their family and upbringing on what they love as their passion and/or do as their livelihood. And while having a talented Jazz Mom may give you a little step-up in following in her footsteps, there are many other ways that our parents, and Mom's in particular as we head toward Mother's Day 2015, have put us on the path toward the music we love and play and listen to day in and day out. My Mom, in particular, made sure that we listened to big string orchestrated music which I think directly led to my liking of both small ensembles with strings and to the complexity that can come with large ensemble Jazz music.

Facebook follower Ann: "Every morning my Mom would wake me up for school to Ella, Louis, Duke and the records of all the "crowd".

Facebook follower Steve: "She played all the "standards" on our old piano at home..."

Facebook follower Anthony: "My mom listened adult am radio classics of the 70's like Anne Murray and Kenny Rogers, the Carpenters and Captain and Tenile. I've had the idea of reworking those songs into electronica, with a twisted modern voice. So as far as jazz, my mom was white bread. But you know I love her and those times it was just me and her, driving and listening to cheesy am radio."

Facebook contributor Steven: "My dad influenced me."

Jazz 88.3 Host and Jazz Drummer Barry Farrar Jr.; ".my early exposure to jazz in the farrar family was huge..My Mom was a singer…I heard Ella, Sarah,June Christy..etc at home as a kid..Also my step Mom was a  huge Lambert Hendricks and Ross lover.Heard Jazz at home home constantly..of course my Dad was a jazz player in the 50'' ..playing with Wofford and Don Sleet..SD Jazz legends…"
