It is with a heavy heart that Jazz 88.3 has learned of Daniel Jackson's passing this morning. He was a first rate composer, saxophonist, pianist, educator and mentor. Daniel's passion for the music and the energy it creates was unmatched. Born in La Jolla and graduated from San Diego High School, he was the epitome of San Diego Jazz. A staple. His collaborations and relationships with legends like Lenny McBrowne, Art Farmer, The Adderley brothers, Jimmy Smith, to San Diego's own- Marshall Hawkins, Charles McPherson and Gilbert Castellanos is a testament to his gift of expression. He will be cherished always.

Daniel Jackson, a true artist, a gentle, generous soul. I am so thankful for the few meetings and conversations I was able to have with him. His caring nature and love for music is appreciated by all who knew him and he will live on in my heart. Thank you Daniel for all the good lessons you've taught us. Te Busco! Rest in peace Daniel.

One day in the late 70s, Daniel and I were on taxi in D.F. on our way to Jalapa, Veracruz where he and Taumbú were working in the University. All of a sudden the traffic stopped, right in front of us, some heavy armed dudes jumped out of VW van and took two young boys by force into the van. Books flew one way and the boys to the back of the van. I could see through the rear view window that the armed dudes had their guns to the young boys head. I quickly reacted and pulled my camera out to shoot what was happening in front of us. Daniel told me, "don;t do it, Zopi." Fear ran down my spine and I put my camera down, fearing I would end up in the back of that van with those boys. Days later when I returned to Coyoacán, the people I was staying with scolded me for not taking those shots because a lot of those boys were never seen again, as the government was conducting a dirty war on young rebel students. Those photos could have helped find those boys. But at the moment I could only think of saving my and Daniel's life.

An extraordinary composer and musician. His legacy of music will speak for itself. But, in the years to come, his masterful approach will resonate even further through every student who ever crossed his path, whether at the piano bench in the little house in San Diego or on one of the many stages he graced with his presence. Rise Well, Sir.
